Seal has Discoid Lupus Erythematosus, a form of lupus that causes inflammation and blistering of the skin, particularly on the face, which led to his distinctive facial scars.
The condition, which developed in his early 20s, became a prominent part of his iconic image. He has supported lupus research and awareness, although he has found some of his initial symptoms traumatising.
