Seven friends, none of whom were serious cyclists, recently gathered from across the UK and took part in a charity bicycle ride totalling over 410 miles from the most Northerly point in Ireland to the most South-westerly point in Ireland. The ride from Malin Head in Co Donegal to Mizen Head in Co Cork was conducted over five days between the 10th and 14th of April, and sponsorship was collected for the St. Thomas' Lupus Trust, Alzheimer's Society and Children's Cancer Care.

The mastermind behind the event was Ian Baxter from Bangor, Co Down. He managed to persuasively 'convince' six of his closest friends and family - all between 40 and 47 years of age, to participate in the cycle ride and assist him with raising sponsorship. The size of the challenge soon became evident when it was realised that not all the volunteers even owned a bicycle! And then, only a few weeks before the event, a training day was organised for a ride from Belfast to Dublin, where only three of the riders turned up and the ride had to be aborted at Drogheda.

The cyclists were ably supported by a small admin team, who would select rest points at key stages and ensure the team were well 'fuelled', with cheese and spam (!) sandwiches, chocolate bars and energy drinks throughout - not food usually associated with performance athletes - but extremely effective nonetheless.

The team reached Mizen Head five days later and averaged a speed of 13 mph in reaching their final destination. They covered an accumulated bike distance of 2870 miles, the pedals were turned between 92,000 and 164,000 times depending on gear changes and the front wheel turned 328,000 revolutions (not that they were bored, but they needed to focus on something other than cycling). During this time there was not one puncture or bike repair needed, although there was one crash only metres from the finish point as the riders jostled for the prime photo position.

The riders are hoping to have raised in excess of £3,000 for their selected charities and would like to thank Lindsay Ford, Reebok, DBC Food Services and the many individual sponsors for their support and making this event a success.

We'd also like to add our thanks to all the team for completing the arduous (and torturous!) journey and also to their supporters.
