Walking Hadrian's Wall
"One evening about a year ago my friend, Madge Wilson and myself, on one of our 'get together nights' (and after a couple of glasses of wine) said "before we get much older, we should walk this National Trail". It was also thought to be a good idea to raise money for the St Thomas' Lupus Trust, as my daughter Alix has Lupus.
My sister, Joy Johnson, Madge's daughter Jo and Jo's daughter Georgina (who is only 9 years old) all wanted to be part of the venture-and so it began! I joined a gym and began some serious training. The walk was scheduled to be done over 6 days from 19th to 24th June. Madge's husband, Eric, did a superb job of planning and organising everything so our grateful thanks go to him.
It was a wonderful walk, although the weather was certainly changeable, with rain, hailstones, strong winds but thankfully also some sunshine. The scenery was very rugged in places and we saw many historical points on route. It has to be said, the Roman soldiers must have been hardy souls to have built this wall, as the area is greatly exposed to the climate and the winters here are less than ideal.
The nine year old kept us going and was an inspiration to all. It's a great feeling of achievement to have completed the walk, exhilarating to say the least, but the other 2 adjectives come to mind - footsore & wearisome! I'm pleased to say that after a hard days walk and with spirits sagging, we had excellent digs where good food, comfy beds and hot showers all played their part in helping us carry on the next day. Whilst on the trail we met many people from all parts of the country 'walking the wall' and the camaraderie was wonderful.
We are extremely pleased to have raised £2,675.50 for the St Thomas' Lupus Trust, which makes the sore feet and aching bones all worthwhile. Many thanks to all who gave donations and their support".
Velma Dixon and fellow walkers.
Our thanks too, to Velma and her merry band for an really amazing fundraising effort!!
