Fundraising

By Geoff Seale

You may think, 'why travel over 300 miles to participate in a race'?

However this is no ordinary race, it's The BUPA Great North Run, the biggest road race in Britain and the top destination for road athletes, community runners and joggers across the United Kingdom and Europe.

Opportunity

It's not just that, it's also a fantastic opportunity to raise as much sponsorship to be given to your chosen charity.

This will be the second year I've been lucky enough to gain an entry into The BUPA Great North Run.

You have to get in quick as the BUPA Great North Run reached its field capacity of 47,000 participants several months ago, forcing organisers to close entries for the 26 September event.

Popular

I was not surprised how quickly it filled up, the fact that it did so quickly and so far in advance of the event shows that the Great North Run is one of the premier and most popular international road events in the world.

This year I decided to raise money for St Thomas' Lupus Trust. I encouraged the charity to offer places in the Great North Run 2004 to anyone interested in running for them.

Unfortunately my wife's auntie (Barbara) who is also a great friend to us was diagnosed with Lupus a few years ago.

My main aim is to raise as much money as possible for this worthwhile cause and also try to beat my personal best of 2 hours 20 minutes!

UPDATE

Well I did it! After four months of training (only when the sun shined!) and the obligatorily begging of family, friends and work colleagues for a handout for the St Thomas' Lupus Trust my chosen charity. I've finally done it; I've completed 'The Great North Run.' 'The Worlds Biggest Half Marathon.'

The crowds were amazing all smiles and cheers it made me feel proud to be part of such a worthwhile event. The relief at having made it was immense the last thing I wanted to do was let my sponsors down. I wore my medal and my St Thomas' Lupus Trust t-shirt with pride for the rest of the day safe in the knowledge that I was a winner as was 49,000 other runners.
