Sometimes in life it's good to do something a little different. Perhaps something that, when you have grandchildren, you can regale them for hours with the story and actually be seen as 'cool'. A group of students from the University of London Air Squadron (ULAS) certainly achieved that!! ULAS, is open to students in London Universities that are interested in joining the RAF.

The concept was initiated by Sqn Ldr Bowland who had taken part in a 'Jailbreak' when he was at university and spent many an hour recounting the story to the students. The aim was to get as far away as possible, with no money, using initiative alone!

The students took up the challenge but decided to make it more structured and as well as completing it for their own self-development they also decided that a charity should benefit. As the St Thomas' Lupus Trust has been one of the charities that ULAR supported for the year they nominated us to receive the sponsorship.

chrisThe challenge was to complete a number of tasks, each with a point value from 10 to 45 points, in a 4 day (3 night) period. The tasks included; spend the night in a police cell (not under arrest!), eat and then wash up at a 5* restaurant, eat breakfast with Chris Moyles (dj), milk a goat, get a celebrity's autograph, drive a tank, attend a wedding and be a street performer in Covent Garden. The teams were asked to get sponsorship per point earned.

This all may sound fun and not that difficult but looks can be deceptive! The teams were only given £2.50 each for the duration of the challenge (and a credit card sealed in an envelope for emergencies). Each team member also took their passport, 2 chocolate bars and one mobile phone per team. They were also issued with a letter explaining that the event was for charity, then they were off!

7 teams took part and all of them did wacky and wonderful things. One team managed tojonathan get free flights to Orlando, Florida and 2 teams got as far as Paris where they played piano in a bar for free food and drink! Most teams managed to spend the night in a police cell - but not for getting into mischief, thank goodness! Another team managed to eat in a 5* restaurant and spend the night in a £3,000 a night suite in a hotel in London.

Well done to all the teams for a really fantastic challenge and to Kate Ainge for the report and photographs - and we benefited by nearly £700 sponsorship!
