Meet a Fellow

Dr Susana Ferreira – Portugal

I’m a Portuguese medical doctor in the fourth year of training in Internal Medicine. I came to Lupus Unit to do a clinical attachment because its world renowned and I think it’s a great opportunity to gain experience and knowledge.

In Portugal these patients are managed by Rheumatologist and/or Internist and there are some specialised units and associations, but they are not so organised and developed as they are here. Patients are neither so well informed nor self-responsible and they almost always rely on their doctors to make any decision.

I work in one of the major hospitals of the country, in Porto. We have some patients with immunological diseases sometimes with severe manifestations and outcome, both as in and out-patients. We try to be updated but we don’t have so much experience as you do. We are now trying to organise a specialised clinic in order to increase our experience and to give patients the most appropriate treatment and support.
